1500 enquiries already registered for 'remarkable' Donaldson's

Demand is building for a new home in one of Edinburgh’s most iconic buildings.

Remarkable' Donaldson's - City & Country

Over 1500 expressions of interest have already been registered for a property at the Category A listed Playfair Building at Donaldson’s, which is being restored and converted by heritage specialist City & Country.

The award-winning developer is currently transforming the building on Haymarket into 112 outstanding new homes, with a sales launch scheduled for winter 2018.

The major conversion is set to be the most exciting residential development coming to the market in Edinburgh this year, and Rettie & Co, the renowned Edinburgh property firm marketing the homes, is expecting interest to increase.

Simon Rettie, Managing Director of Rettie & Co, says:

The interest to date has been exceptional, and we expect the number of interested parties to continue to climb as we progress towards the sales launch in autumn this year. We look forward to unveiling two exciting show homes to demonstrate the superb attention to detail and brilliant way City & Country has made use of the space available.

Donaldson’s is such a high profile building within Edinburgh and forms an important part of its history. We are delighted to work with City & Country on this remarkable project and are confident that an exceptional addition to the city will be created.

Suzanne Aplin, Sales & Marketing Director of City & Country, comments:

The Playfair apartments at Donaldson’s have many historic and stylish features such as original gothic style windows, generous ceiling heights, original woodwork panelling and historic cornices, alongside a contemporary, fully inclusive specification with sleek kitchens, luxurious bathrooms and an interior design scheme created to maximise the beauty of each apartment. Our clever use of space throughout the building makes the best use of the historic fabric, creating many unique living spaces ranging from studios, mezzanine apartments, split-level, loft and penthouse accommodation in a wide variety of sizes.

Formerly Donaldson’s Hospital, the old building has a fascinating history. Built between 1842 and 1851 after its benefactor and local newspaper editor, James Donaldson, bequeathed all of his wealth to build and found a hospital for children after his death, the striking design is the master work of renowned visionary architect William Henry Playfair, whose other famous works include the National Monument and the National Gallery of Scotland. Its great quadrangular form creates an attractive internal courtyard, whilst the exterior is framed by landscaped gardens and a sweeping lawn to the front.

Nick Watson, Rettie & Co’s Director of New Homes & Consultancy, believes the elegant design of the building, coupled with its important role in the city’s history, makes it a unique opportunity for Edinburgh house-hunters. He adds:

To own a property at Donaldson’s will be a truly unique experience. The outstanding features of the building have been enhanced to the highest possible standard with each apartment carefully and thoughtfully designed to maximise the potential of every space.

The high quality specification will complement the magnificent building in each of the individual properties as well as particular attention having been paid to ensuring the common areas are some of the best seen in the city. This development will stand out within Edinburgh and will be extremely popular with the market.

The new apartments will be available at a public sales launch on this Autumn. Prices for studio and one bedroom apartments start from £250,000, two bedroom apartments start from £450,000 and three bedroom apartments start from £750,000.
