Restore The General in Bristol - City & Country

More than 20 businesses and over 100 people from the South West are currently helping to transform The General in Bristol, demonstrating the broad range of construction skills throughout the region and delivering a major boost to the local economy.

The distinctive Grade II listed former Bristol General Hospital has been extensively restored and converted into a range of Characterful period apartments by heritage experts City & Country.

Restoration work started in 2012 and buildings already imaginatively converted include the chapel, lodge house, the nurses wing, the former wards and the adjoining octagonal tower. Work is continuing throughout 2018 to convert the King Edward VII Wing – the former doctors’ accommodation that overlooks Commercial Road.

Bristol-based Optimum Drywall Systems are one of the subcontractors that have worked on the project since work commenced in 2013. Andy Oswin, a Director with the firm, comments:

“We have been on-site since the commencement of the project and it’s always nice to be involved in such a prestigious project in your home town! We’ve been working closely with City & Country across phases, delivering a range of services including dry-lining, internal partitioning, suspended ceilings, rendering and decorating. The result is a range of luxury apartments, built to the highest standards.”

Helen Moore, Managing Director of City & Country, added:

“Major restoration projects such as The General demand a huge supply chain of highly skilled construction experts. We are always keen to support local businesses and we have some fantastically skilful people in the area, so it makes complete sense to use these skills, which not only benefits us but also provides a real boost to the local economy.”
