The Story Behind The King’s Collection
A pioneering legacy of design, wellbeing and craftsmanship in the heart of West Sussex
Few developments carry a story as rich and meaningful as The King’s Collection near Midhurst. Set within the historic King Edward VII Estate, this remarkable location is defined by a legacy that blends architectural innovation with a deep-rooted commitment to wellbeing.
Commissioned by King Edward VII in 1901, the original sanatorium was conceived as a forward-thinking healing environment for those suffering from tuberculosis. At a time when fresh air and carefully considered surroundings were central to recovery, the estate was designed to offer both physical and emotional comfort.
The project was led by renowned hospital specialist H. Percy Adams, with early design contributions from his assistant, Charles Holden, who would later become one of Britain’s most influential architects. At the time, Holden was at the beginning of his career, yet his vision helped shape a development that would stand the test of time.
Inspired by the principles of the Arts & Crafts movement, the architecture emphasised simplicity, quality craftsmanship and harmony with the natural environment. Sussex vernacular style was thoughtfully incorporated throughout, with tile-hung façades, elegant proportions and materials chosen for both their practicality and beauty.
Inside, intelligent design played a vital role in supporting patient care. Interiors were carefully planned to minimise dust and maintain high levels of hygiene, reflecting the medical priorities of the era while also creating calm, restful spaces.
The estate was widely admired for its design excellence. Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner later described it as “one of the best buildings of its date,” recognising both its aesthetic appeal and its pioneering approach. From its distinctive V-shaped open-air chapel to bespoke interiors crafted by skilled artisans, every detail was created with purpose and care.
Today, The King’s Collection continues this legacy, sensitively reimagined for modern living. The development honours its remarkable past while offering beautifully designed homes that embrace both heritage and innovation.
This is more than a place to live, it is a place shaped by vision, craftsmanship and a belief in the power of thoughtful design to enhance everyday life.
