Local Downsizers Loving Life Following Move To Bristol Landmark, The General
Bristolians Mary and Tom Tippetts are loving life at The General, where they have recently bought a new home.
Mary and Tom have spent their lives in Bristol, and having both retired they continue to volunteer in the city. After deciding they no longer needed their family home, they were keen to downsize to a new property in the city centre. Mary explains:
“We are both Bristolians and love the city and all that it offers. Fortunately, our jobs kept us in Bristol for our working lives too. We loved our family home and it had lots of character, but we were looking to downsize following retirement. We found out about The General on the web and we were excited because several of our close friends had trained and worked as nurses there.”
Moments from the city centre, The General has been transformed into a range of fantastic new homes. The former hospital is also home to a range of outstanding waterside restaurants that have created a new social scene, and Tom and Mary love the vibrant lifestyle the area now offers.
Tom says: “We loved the fact that The General is a landmark building in Bristol and we were thrilled to discover that it was being restored in a loving way. We feel privileged to be part of the transformation of the building into something so special. Because it is an old building, our apartment is very spacious with big rooms. The lifestyle here is brilliant; every day we enjoy walking around the harbor and we have been seeing many more concerts and eating out more often.”
Overlooking the Bathurst basin, The General is a short walk from Queen’s Square and Temple Meads station, yet it retains a peaceful atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Tom and Mary have been making the most of the area, as they explain:
“We love the local area. It is such an interesting and cosmopolitan place with loads of history and exciting festivals on the harbour. It’s very quiet at night and calm in the evenings, when you can enjoy the terrific waterside views. We must say how great it is to have the services of our Concierge. Nothing is too much trouble and we can always get him on the phone if we need to.”
