History of Bath Press

A Lasting Impression Since 1889

Sir Isaac Pitman, famed for inventing the world’s most widely used shorthand system, had a revolutionary influence on the communication and education of the English language.

The 5.3 acre Bath Press site was once home to Pitman’s Fifth Phonetic Institute and then the Pitman Press, later becoming The
Bath Press, the city’s largest employer.

Today, the University of Bath commemorates Pitman’s exemplary work with a dedicated collection of materials relating to shorthand, writing systems, phonetics and the language of communication.
