History of Angel's Courtyard, Colchester Development

Colchester is said to be the oldest recorded town in Britain and was the capital of the Roman province of Britannia even before London came to claim the title.

  • 16th Century
Much of the centre, including Angel’s Courtyard, lies within a Conservation Area which means its character can only be conserved or improved upon.
The collection of buildings which form Angel’s Courtyard have had an eclectic history. The courtyard originally belonged to the 16th Century Angel Inn, later renamed the Angel Hotel which was for 100 years home to the Angel Lodge of Freemasons.
The courtyard had stabling facilities and was the arrival and departure point for stagecoaches, so it would have been the first point of call for many travellers to Colchester.
  • 20th Century
Also forming the new Angel’s Courtyard is a Grade II Listed three storey building built in circa 1840 behind which stands the former Council Offices constructed in the late 1980s, now converted to form the hub of the development.
Alongside this eclectic mix of listed and contemporary buildings, vibrant Colchester bustles with life. This vivacious, forward-thinking town is ready to embrace the future.
