Expect the Unexpected

The conversion of the 1885 Old Dorchester Gaol, will see the former Dorchester Prison which closed in 2013 transformed in to a number of unusual character homes.

The main cell block dating back to 1885 will be turned into residential use, whilst the sensitively designed new buildings will provide additional housing. Once converted the scheme will provide a range of one, two and three bedroom homes with private parking, all surrounded by high quality landscaping. The Grade II listed gatehouse will also be restored and will continue to provide a focal entrance point.

History of 1885 The Old Dorchester Gaol

The Old Dorchester Gaol sits on the site of a former Norman Castle. The Domesday Survey recorded that around 90 homes were destroyed in the town to make way for the castle. The site was chosen due to its defensible elevated position and location next to the river. The castle fell into disrepair and was consequently abandoned in 1272.
