Meet Francesca & Matt at The 1840, St George's Gardens

Meet Francesca & Matt – First-time buyers at The 1840, St George’s Gardens in SW17

While many first-time buyers can visit many properties before making a choice, Francesca and her partner Matt, both aged 25, fell in love with The 1840, St George’s Gardens the instant they stepped into the beautifully converted Grade II Listed building in South West London.

The couple were so impressed with the former hospital building’s perfect location, community feel and rich history of the apartments that had been so carefully converted, they knew immediately their search was over.

We had only just started our hunt for a home when we went to visit The 1840, and it took our breath away immediately,” said Matt.

They were so taken with the development that they decided straight away to buy a two-bedroom apartment off plan.

This purchase is one of the most spontaneous things we’ve ever done! There is nothing quite like it anywhere else in London,” said Matt. “We knew it was going to be incredible living in an historic building, with all the heritage elements around us, in our own little village in South West London.”

The 1840, St George’s Gardens is a collection of award-winning luxury one, two and three-bedroom apartments and duplex units, located within an iconic Grade II Listed building in the heart of South West London.

Set in a former hospital, The 1840, St George’s Gardens development forms part of the new Springfield Village, surrounded by extensive 32-acre parkland and boasting a prime location between Tooting, Balham, Earlsfield and Wandsworth Common, with unmatched access to Central London.

Matt and Francesca met when they were both studying at the University of Warwick. Francesca is originally from the Wirral, in the North West of England, and studied Politics, International Studies and Quantitative Methods, while Londoner Matt gained his Masters in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. They are both now working for large technology companies in central London.

Prior to deciding to move in together, both Francesca and Matt were living with friends in rented accommodation, Francesca in a house share in Greenwich and Matt in Clapham North – but both were keen to stop renting and take a step onto the property ladder as soon as possible. However, as first-time buyers they knew the challenge would be to find the right property, which worked for them, in the right part of London, and at the right price.

Having both spent time in leafy South West London, they were automatically drawn to its sprawling parks, continental café and restaurant scene and easy transport links to Central London, so that is where they began their search.

“We were after something quite specific,” said Francesca, “which can be hard to find in London. We wanted a good layout, where you can actually use all the space, and some outdoor space.

“It was my godmother who suggested we take a look at The 1840, St George’s Gardens development as she had come across the scheme through her work in television.

“We were instantly drawn to the community feel there. Not only do you have the joy of a cottage-like home, with its own courtyard area, but there is an abundance of communal spaces on the doorstep which we can enjoy. It has the feeling of a village, while being within an easy distance of the centre of town. The development had a really unique feel to it, and with plenty of character and unparalleled finishes, we knew it suited us perfectly.”

“Though we bought off plan,” Matt added, “from the show home we saw, it was clear that the build quality is top end, the specification of the interiors and fixtures and fittings are excellent, and attention has been given to every detail. We are extremely excited to move into our new home and begin our new life at The 1840.”

The couple have purchased a two-bedroom apartment, part of phase two of The 1840 development. The apartment is set within the Kitchen Yard, and offers just under 800 sq ft of living space, with an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area, equipped with integrated Siemens appliances and white stone worktops. The couple also have access to a beautiful, communal landscaped space (which makes up part of the 8-acres of private gardens and courtyards offered to residents) as well as an on-site concierge service.

Shelley West, Sales & Marketing Director at City & Country, said: “The 1840, St George’s Gardens is one-of-a-kind and is proving extremely popular with discerning young professionals. Buyers are drawn to the quality of the offering so close to Central London and the abundance of green space on the doorstep. Though there is a plethora of independent retail outlets, coffee shops and restaurants on the doorstep, The 1840 is a beautifully designed welcome retreat from busy life for residents, and the range of opportunities available ensures that an enviable lifestyle at an exclusive location is available for all.”

Each home combines original features with a superior specification, blending heritage architecture with contemporary styling. The flexible living spaces have been created to compliment the beautifully restored character features, including original windows, high ceilings and heritage stonework.

All homes feature premium design elements, with underfloor heating as well as 100% pure wool carpets in all bedrooms. Many homes also include private outdoor space, with views across the extensive landscaped grounds and on to the parkland beyond. Selected homes also benefit from secure underground parking and electric car charging points.
