The palatial Playfair Building has overlooked the capital’s West Coates district since the mid-19th century, but it has been empty in recent years after it stopped operating as a school for deaf children. That will change this year when the developer City & Country reveals the first phase of 112 properties to be built within the A listed building.
Last summer Bricks & Mortar gained exclusive access to the site to see the painstaking renovation work in progress, which includes the removal, restoration and rehanging of the original doors. Joinery, staircases and fireplaces have also been retained.
The properties, a mixture of single and multi-storey flats, plus penthouses and two converted gate lodges, will launch next month. Three show apartments, including a three-bedroom flat featuring a bathroom with views over the city, are complete. More than 2,000 registered prospective buyers will be able to view and bid on the first flats within weeks. Price from £250,000 to £2 million.
