With the current economic climate forcing many people to work longer hours and making a healthy ‘work-life balance’ almost impossible to achieve, many savvy buyers are taking the decision to cut out stressful commuting, distractions, and office politics and moving into homes that double up as their workplace. Ruth Canning and Peter Sheridan are amongst this growing number of people choosing to work from home, having bought their newly converted duplex apartment at City & Country’s Brentwood development, The Galleries, from where they run their furniture and interior design business.
Having previously lived in a penthouse apartment in a former warehouse in London, Ruth and Peter knew they needed a larger property that would allow them not only more living space, but also ample room for them to run their business, Canning & Sheridan.
Ruth comments: “Moving out of the City never really crossed our minds, but when we saw The Galleries in a local London magazine we knew it was special. We needed a property that could complement our lifestyle of working from home, but that also provided a relaxing space in which we could switch off from work in the evenings; our new apartment ticked both boxes.
“The development itself had such an impact – the buildings are truly unique and the way the space has been converted and sympathetically restored is stunning. Our home boasts lots of character but with a modern twist. As a designer, I am always inspired by art, and our new home reminded me of Old Master paintings, with rich colours and fabrics. The landscaped gardens are a bonus for us too, and it’s so quiet and peaceful – we would struggle to find anything quite as exciting and well-suited to us as this in the Capital.”
The couple loved the open-plan layout of their two-bedroom apartment, which is ideal for socialising and hosting friends, family and clients. Boasting a wealth of traditional features, combined with contemporary décor and fittings, their home also features an unusual double-height space with two mezzanine levels, which provides set living and office areas to help them keep their work and home life separate. Furthermore, as designers, the couple have added their own decorative finishes to the property, with new lighting, blinds and unique furniture pieces.
Although they are now outside of London, the local area around The Galleries has plenty to offer Ruth and Peter. There is a wide selection of shops, restaurants, and bars within a 10-minute walk, in the bustling town centre of Brentwood, which offer a great and varied social life.
Peter comments: “A lot of our friends and clients are in London, so we will still be in and out of the City from time-to-time. The beauty is that we are still within easy reach of London, but far enough away to get the type of property and space we really needed.
“We have no regrets about moving out of London, as our new home here provides everything we need for us and our business. Our apartment has a wow-factor, which continually impresses new clients, and it’s so much bigger than anything of a similar price in central London. The large garden, the history and the character of the buildings make us feel proud to be living here. We are lucky to own a part of something that is so unique and we have really made it a new home for us and our business.”
Mandy Soames, Sales & Marketing Director at City & Country, comments: “We believe that Ruth and Peter have made a very shrewd decision to choose to relocate from London and run their business from their new home at The Galleries. With peaceful surroundings, stunning 19th Century architecture, beautiful gardens and excellent value for money when compared to London property prices, we feel confident that they will find plenty of inspiration for their business here, appreciate the scale of their new home and achieve a better work-life balance. The elegant style and period character of the properties at The Galleries appeals to a diverse range of buyers and by opting for a managed development like The Galleries, Ruth and Peter, like all our other residents, benefit from living in a beautifully maintained environment while having plenty of time left to spend on their business and other interests.”
Both brand new and conversion properties are now available at The Galleries, ranging in price from £199,500 for a one bedroom duplex to £475,000 for a two bedroom penthouse apartment. Many of the properties are also eligible under NewBuy; the 95% mortgage scheme which enables buyers to purchase one of the properties with just a 5% deposit. For those keen to find out more about purchasing a property at The Galleries, the on-site sales suite and show homes are open daily between 10am and 5pm.
