With latest figures revealing that the average age of a first time buyer has risen to 37*, local resident Emma Rudgeley has bucked the trend by 11 years, having taken her first step onto the property ladder aged just 26, at City & Country’s popular Brentwood development, The Galleries.
Emma was not really looking to buy a home of her own but was curious to see what City & Country had done with the former Victorian hospital due to the illustrious history of the building. She went to investigate and fell in love with her two-bedroom conversion apartment as soon as she saw it. Having been carefully converted, the homes at The Galleries have been finished to the highest standard, offering an abundance of historic architectural intricacies, set amongst the very best of contemporary interior design.
Emma comments: “I was completely blown away by the amount of character that the development offers and knew straight away that I had come across something special. My father had always been really interested in the architecture and history of buildings so I’ve grown to value these in a home too, but it’s hard to come across a property that offers both period features and modern decoration. The Galleries ticked both boxes, offering a historic home with a modern twist, and I simply knew I had to live there.”
Emma was surprised at how much space her new apartment at The Galleries offered. She comments: “Whilst new-build homes have a reputation for their cramped interiors, my conversion apartment at The Galleries has great room proportions and the restored sash windows let in plenty of light to create a bright and airy feel. I initially had concerns about downsizing to an apartment from my four bedroom family home but I have room to store all my belongings, and the fact that the development is surrounded by landscaped courtyard gardens and close to several large parks means I have access to plenty of outdoor space too.”
As a first-time buyer, value for money was naturally of great importance to Emma and the location of The Galleries allowed Emma’s money to go further, as she found her Brentwood home more affordable than properties of a similar size in London. Proximity to the city was important for Emma, who works as an Executive Assistant in the capital, and Brentwood’s offering of a 45-minute direct train service into London Liverpool Street made it an ideal commuter-belt location in which to purchase a home.
Emma says: “I think a lot of people are concerned about how long it will take them to get in to the office from outside of the city, but I really couldn’t complain about my commute at all. My home is only a short walk from the train station and I can get a seat on the train more easily here than if I began my journey in the city centre. I’m also close to the M25, which is handy on weekends when I’m more likely to drive. It’s all so easy, and the beauty of my new home and its semi-rural surroundings makes it worth every extra second of the commute.”
Located on the outskirts of Brentwood, residents at The Galleries enjoy a prime location in which to enjoy all that the local area has to offer. Brentwood High Street is a 10-minute walk away and offers a wide range of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs, whilst nearby Lakeside Shopping Centre also offers a varied selection of shopping and dining facilities. Warley Country Park and South Weald Country Park are both less than five miles away and are popular with locals wanting to enjoy long walks and bike rides in the countryside.
Emma says: “I’m so happy to have found my home at The Galleries; the beauty of the site and the unique style of the properties there gave me the motivation I needed to fly the nest. I never would have imagined I’d be able to afford such an impressive property - certainly not for my very first home – and I feel really lucky to be living here.”
Mandy Soames, Head of Sales & Marketing at City & Country, comments: “We are thrilled that Emma has chosen to embark on the property ladder with City & Country at The Galleries. The elegant style and period character of the properties at the development appeal to a diverse range of buyers, and by opting for a managed development like The Galleries, Emma, like all our other residents, benefits from living in a beautifully maintained environment while having time to spend on her career and other interests. We hope she will be very happy there for many years to come.”
