Next Phase of Consultation Announced for Restoration of Historic Hospital

1st November 2011

Developer City & Country Group, the award-winning restoration and conservation specialist has announced the date of a public exhibition about its plans to redevelop Bristol General Hospital. The exhibition, which will form part of the second phase of consultation on the proposals, will take place between 12 noon and 8.00pm on 2 November 2011 in the Lucas Ward of the General Hospital.

Following initial exhibitions in September, which saw City & Country introduce itself to the local community and listen to local residents’ aspirations for the future of the hospital’s historic collection of buildings, the next phase will present see an initial masterplan design unveiled for the hospital site.

The site contains a number of historic buildings, including the Grade II listed former lodge and main hospital gates on Guinea Street, as well as an array of listed Victorian buildings, which have been added to the site at later stages. The master plan will aim to restore and preserve the buildings’ unique historic character.

The first phase of consultation received a positive response from local community representatives and residents living close to the hospital. City & Country Group intends to continue working closely with the local community throughout the redevelopment.

Helen Moore, Residential Managing Director for City & Country Group, said:

“We would like to thank all who took the time to come and meet us and provide us with their views on the future of the hospital at our first consultation event. Following the positive response we received from the community, we would like to continue our dialogue with key stakeholders and local residents and present our initial masterplan for the hospital site.  Our proposals are designed to ensure that we will breathe new life into its collection of historic buildings and provide a long term beneficial use to ensure that they are saved for the benefit of future generations. As part of the proposals later additions to the historic buildings will be removed to allow for the introduction of sensitively designed and placed new residential dwellings to add a new layer of history to the site and create high quality landmark buildings for Bristol.

“We invite all those interested in preserving and restoring this much-cherished local heritage asset to come along to our exhibition, meet the project team and share their views about our vision for the site.”
