Queen Victoria took a shine to the “Playfair building”: the monarch was said to have found Donaldson’s school for the deaf, designed by William Henry Playfair, more impressive than her nearby Palace of Holyroodhouse. The quadrangular building has been converted into 112 homes, from studios to three-bedders. This 1,950 sq ft apartment has three bedrooms, soaring ceilings and an open-plan living space.
